Willits High School offers four classes in the CTE Cabinetry, Millwork, & Woodworking Pathway: CTE Woodshop 1-3 CTE Custom doors, Woodshop safety, and Cabinetry. Each class gives students the opportunity to learn new skills, such as accountability, time management, & decision-making. As well as having a greater chance of finding a successful career. Activities done in this class include making shelves, birdhouses, Cutting boards, and Other small projects to gain confidence in work
Required Courses Needed to Complete Pathway

This course is an introduction to tools and processes used in carpentry, woodworking, and the construction trades. It is the prerequisite course for all CTE Building and Construction courses at Willits High School. Its focus is on the tools of the trade and their safe use. Through hands-on projects each student will gain experience and knowledge necessary to continue in their chosen CTE Building and Construction pathway. These projects will integrate the safe use of tools, mathematical measurements and concepts, critical thinking, time management, and teamwork.

CTE Woodworking is a half-year elective that provides an introduction to visual and three-dimensional art design through the creative employment of woodworking materials and techniques. Students are introduced to elements of design that include line, shape, the use of space and negative space, scale, proportion, color and grain orientation. The hands-on nature of this course is intended to not only develop the student's ability to work successfully with the material but also provide the kind of experiential learning that fosters confident self-expression in the arts, develops problem-solving skills, improves collaborative work habits, and encourages a natural appreciation for the details of good design. Additional goals include building familiarity and ease with the vocabulary surrounding the analysis of art and design and to foster an appreciation for the intrinsic value of fine art and craftsmanship. While the design and construct of a unique piece of heirloom quality furniture requires many hours of studio work, a creative, collegial atmosphere prevails in the studio, a space where students feel welcome, supported, encouraged and inspired. The class explores student project development in a fine woodworking capacity. Hand and power tool safety is emphasized, after basic project assignments, each student is encouraged to design and create a custom project which is within the student's capabilities-but built to stretch the student’s abilities

CTE Woodworking III is an opportunity for students to use the technical skills learned in CTE Woodworking I & CTE Woodworking II and create sculptural works of artistic expression. Emphasis is placed on greater technical mastery as well as developing a strong personal aesthetic and applying it to each project built. Every project will follow a thorough and rigorous design process from idea inception to sculptural object completion. Students will rely on accurate measurements and geometry to build work that is structurally sound. Accurate measurements will also be crucial in the development of accurate cut lists, orders of operation and project budgets.
